Lynn and Alex:

Lynn is a single mom to Alex, age 4, who attends Maitland Farm Preschool. She currently works full time in sales, but has decided to pursue another career – teaching! Her bachelor’s degree is in another field, so she’s been working hard to fulfill the requirements to become a certified teacher. She studied all summer for the elementary education subject exam, one of three required exams for certification. She passed it on her first try, which is something only one third of prospective teachers accomplish. She spends all day every Saturday taking the required education courses. She says all the hard work isn’t easy, nor does she expect teaching to be, but she is finding it very rewarding. Way to go, Lynn!.

Vashon:

Vashon is a single mom to two daughters, A’Treyanna, age 5 and Aaliyah, age 2. The family joined Childcare Resources in August of 2005.
Knowing she had quality, affordable and consistent childcare arrangements allowed Vashon to focus on strengthening her family. She was able to gain experience at a steady job, begin a college degree in early education, and build her own home through Habitat for Humanity.
This past fall A’Treyanna started kindergarten, and Vashon landed a job with a rare benefit: free childcare, allowing the family to “graduate” from the Childcare Resources program. Vashon has since earned her child development associate credential and continues taking college courses. She reports that A’Treyanna is thriving at Dodgertown Elementary and Aaliyah is following right behind her big sister. The family recently enjoyed their first Christmas in their new home. We are so proud of all they have accomplished!

Marcella and Nicholas:

Marcella gave birth to Nicholas the summer before her junior year of high school. She took parenting classes at Vero Beach High School and graduated with her class in June 2006.  Despite English being her second language (she is originally from Colombia), she passed the FCAT and was able to enroll at Indian River Community College. She also works part time as a hostess at the John’s Island Club. Marcella says she would not have been able to start college without the childcare tuition assistance she receives through Childcare Resources. Nicholas is now three years old and thriving at Tiny Treasures in Sebastian. Marcella is starting her second year of college and her goal is to become a psychologist. She wants to give Nicholas a good life and set an example for him about the importance of education.

Tamara:

Thanks to you, Tamara can be a full time student at Brevard Community College (she lives in Sebastian). She has completed 56 credit hours there maintaining a 4.0 average. Tamara recently found out she is one of 12 students accepted into the 2 year dental hygienist program (over 100 applicants). Two of Tamara’s three children are in our program. Tamara’s husband works full time as an IT Technician.
